West TN Game of the Week- Week 10, 2021: Hardin County vs. Milan
John Thornton
Week 9 in West Tennessee High School Football was extremely eventful with upsets and region championships being decided all across the area. From Munford upsetting Dyer County to Ripley defeating Dyersburg, and most notably Lexington toppling Hardin County, there were stunners across the board. 5 Region Championships were clinched in Week 10 in West Tennessee, starting with Lexington claiming Region 6 in Class 4A, Haywood taking Region 7 in Class 4A, Milan clinching Region 7 in Class 3A, Peabody securing Region 7 in Class 2A, and Huntingdon wrapping up Region 6 in Class 1A.
Week 10 is shaping up to be another week filled with heavyweight bouts. In Class 1A, undefeated Greenfield travels to Tiptonville to take on defending 1A state champion Lake County, in a game that will decide the winner of Region 7 of Class 1A. Henry County travels to play Clarksville Northeast in a game that will likely determine the champion of Region 7 in Class 5A. But the best game on the schedule in West Tennessee is the showdown between Milan and Hardin County.
Hardin County was the heavy favorite to win Region 6 of Class 4A all season long, but those expectations came crashing down last week in a shocking 27-14 defeat at the hands of Lexington. The 14 points scored was the lowest scoring output of the season for the Tigers, which now begs the question of how this team will respond to the adversity of losing out on a region title. At the end of the day, the end goal for Coach Matt Smith’s team was never a Region Title but the State Title. It won’t get any easier Friday night with a trip to Milan, one of the hottest teams in the state, but expect Hardin County to be ready to play and bounce back.
While Hardin County deals with the effects of their first loss of the season, the Milan Bulldogs enter Friday’s game without a loss in over 2 months. A season-opening defeat to Class 2A juggernaut Peabody seems like a distant memory now, as Milan has ripped off 7 straight wins in that time period including a thrilling 14-7 3 OT victory over Covington on October 2. Coach Carl Diffee has the Bulldogs back where they want to be after securing the region crown last week. In a matchup aimed to prepare both teams for a grueling playoff run, it will come down to who wants this one more.
This will be just the 5th All-Time Meeting between the two teams, with Milan leading the series 3-1. Hardin County won last year’s meeting 14-7, so Milan will seek their revenge at the newly renovated Johnie Hale Stadium on Friday evening at 7 p.m.

Two West Tennessee Programs Looking to Get Over The Hump Collide in Week 2
An old West Tennessee rivalry is set to be renewed this week when the Covington Chargers and Haywood County Tomcats meet for the first time since 2014. The two programs met on 15 different occasions from 1994-2014, with Covington holding a 9-6 advantage in that span. The rivalry itself dates back to the 1960s with Covington holding a 45-34-3 overall edge.
Neither team expected to see each other on the schedule this year, but several schedule changes allowed the teams to meet in 2020. Originally scheduled for Friday, the game has been moved to Thursday due to the threat of weather on Friday.
Haywood comes into Thursday’s game looking to build on their success over the last 5 years. The Tomcats have been to the Class 4A Semi-Finals each of the last 3 seasons, including a State Runner-Up finish in 2018. Head Coach Chris Smith led his team to a 12-2 record in his first season in charge a year ago, falling in the Semi-Finals to Springfield 17-14. Coach Smith will have several adjustments to make after a tough 27-18 loss to Class 5A juggernaut Henry County in Week 1.
Whereas Haywood has been a fantastic 4A program over the last 5 years, Covington has spent that same time looking to finally get over the hump in Class 3A. The Chargers have been the unquestioned kings of 3A football in West Tennessee over the last 3 years with 3 straight trips to the Semi-Finals and 2 State Runner Up finishes, losing to East Tennessee powerhouse Alcoa in 2018 and 2017. In the last 3 seasons, Covington has amassed a phenomenal record of 38-6, with 3 of those losses coming in the postseason, 2 in the title game to Alcoa. Coach J.R. Kirby hardly skipped a beat after taking over for Coach Marty Wheeler last season, posting an 11-3 record and another trip to the Semi-Finals. 2020 looks no different so far as the Chargers throttled cross-county rival Munford 41-6 in the opener. This season the Chargers will look to finally capture that ever so elusive gold ball.
Look for this game between two of West Tennessee’s best programs to be one of the best games in the state this weekend. Kickoff from L.Z. Hurley Memorial Stadium is at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
West TN Game of the Week- Week 13 Covington at Milan
John Thornton
In any sport, the postseason is where the wheat is cut from the chaff, and the great teams rise above the rest of the field to become champions. The month of November is just that time period for the TSSAA High School Football Playoffs.
Most teams in West Tennessee had a bye week in the 1st round of the playoffs due to Shelby County Schools canceling football season for the majority of schools in the Memphis Metro Area. With that bye week in effect, most teams in the western part of the state will see familiar regional foes for the second time this season on Friday night, with seasons on the line. As everyone knows, revenge can be a major motivating factor, and beating a team twice in one season is a tough thing to do.
Numerous great matchups dot the landscape in West Tennessee this week. In Class 1A, Greenfield seeks revenge on West Carroll who spoiled the Yellow Jackets’ undefeated season with a 33-14 win on October 30. In 2A, McKenzie prepares to host Adamsville, who upset the Rebels 23-17 in overtime 2 weeks ago. At the 4A level, Haywood and Dyersburg prepare to meet for the 1st time all season, after the 1st meeting was canceled due to COVID-19 cases in the Trojan program. Meanwhile, in 5A, Brighton will attempt to pull off their second straight upset as they head to Henry County fresh off a 48-28 win over Dyer County last week. These are just a few of the fantastic matchups to watch this week, but none will be better than the rematch between Covington and Milan.
Coach Carl Diffee has Milan red hot in his first year in charge. Led by Class of 2022 3-star athlete Anthony Brown, the Bulldog offense has engineered 9 straight wins since a seasoning opening defeat to reigning Class 2A state champion Peabody. While the Bulldogs sit pretty at 9-1 and champions of Region 7-3A, it nearly was all wiped out. Allegations of Milan playing 2 ineligible players this season emerged 2 weeks ago, putting the Bulldogs season in doubt. With the TSSAA clearing Milan, the Bulldogs now set their eyes on the ultimate prize of a state title.
Revenge is at the forefront of Covington’s minds entering this game. A 6-0 start to the season was derailed by a 14-7 triple-overtime loss to Milan back on October 2 and was followed by a narrow 22-21 defeat at the hands of South Gibson, sending Covington to the #3 seed of Region 7-3A. But Coach J.R. Kirby knew his team’s ultimate goal was not winning a region title, but a state title. A loss Friday would be the first time since 2017 that the Chargers would not have advanced to the Semi-Finals. To make a return to the state title game Covington will have to avenge the earlier season loss to Milan.
This will be the 18th all-time meeting between the schools with Milan leading the series 10-7. This will be the 5th time the programs have met in the playoffs, with Covington winning the last postseason meeting in 2018 22-0. The winner of this game is highly expected to make a push for the State Championship game and potentially knock off 5-time reigning 3A state champion Alcoa. If the last meeting was any indication, expect a physical defensive slugfest that will come down to the wire at Johnnie Hale Stadium.
